Softball suffers road sweep

Waynesburg drops two at NAIA opponent Point Park

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (March 22) – The Waynesburg University softball team traveled to Point Park University to face off with the Pioneers. The Yellow Jackets fell 5-2 in game one of a doubleheader, before dropping an 8-2 final in the late contest.

Waynesburg (5-11) fell behind 4-0 in the opener after three inning of action, before finally breaking up the shutout with a run in the top of the fourth. Senior right fielder Cami Grimes doubled home freshman shortstop Keri Renzler.

After Point Park (5-13) added a score in the bottom of the sixth, Waynesburg tallied its final run of the opener when freshman third baseman Sabrina Stankus recorded a groundout RBI that plated senior Stephanie Kotomski.

Freshman Courtney Messenger suffered the loss in the circle after working all six innings of a complete game. She allowed four earned runs on seven hits and a walk. The first-year hurler recorded five strikeouts.

Waynesburg got off to a faster start in game two by getting out to a 1-0 edge on a first-inning passed ball. Junior catcher Ashley DeMarco crossed home plate on the mishap. Point Park shook off the early mistake by posting a three spot in the bottom of the frame.

The Jackets trimmed their deficit down to 3-2 in the top of the third when a Stankus groundout allowed DeMarco to score her second run of the game. Unfortunately, the Pioneers snuffed out any hope of a comeback by scoring the final five runs of the contest.

DeMarco and Renzler both recorded two hits in game two. Freshman Cat Allstat got the start in the circle and gave up the loss after allowing six runs, four of which were earned, on eight hits and three walks over four innings of work.

Waynesburg returns to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at La Roche College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
