Jackets play two at Thomas More

Waynesburg swept by Saints

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. (March 26) – The Waynesburg University baseball team wrapped up its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) weekend series at Thomas More with a seven-inning doubleheader against the Saints. The Yellow Jackets dropped both contests by the final scores of 6-1 and 6-3.

Waynesburg (1-13, 0-3) fell behind 5-0 before breaking up the shutout in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore left fielder Tyler Godwin singled in junior center fielder Josh Hausler for the tally. Thomas More (8-3, 3-0) homered in its half of the sixth to bring about the final score of 6-1.

Senior Brian Resnik got the start on the mound for Waynesburg and suffered the loss in a complete game effort. He allowed four earned runs on eight hits and a walk. The defending co-PAC Pitcher of the Year piled up eight strikeouts on the day.

Godwin recorded both hits for the Jackets, one of which was a double.

The Jacket bats were a bit more potent in the late contest. After Thomas More jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, Waynesburg grabbed its only lead of the doubleheader with a three spot in the top of the third.

Godwin was once again a key player in the Orange and Black offense as he drove in junior shortstop Nathan Mori for his team's first run of the late contest. The first-year transfer came into score during the ensuing at-bat of senior first baseman Matt Bensinger. Bensinger's two-run single also plated Hausler to give the Jackets the 3-2 edge.

Unfortunately, the Saints responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third to go ahead 5-3. The home team added one more in the fifth to wrap up the win.

Junior Luke Carter suffered the pitching loss for Waynesburg after allowing five earned runs on eight hits and two walks over a six-inning complete game. He struck out two Saints.

Seven different Jackets picked up a single each in the late loss.

Waynesburg continues a taxing early stretch of its schedule on Friday, April 1, when it heads to La Roche. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
