Lacrosse hosts Franciscan

Waynesburg fall 11-8 in back-and-forth affair

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 31) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team welcomed Franciscan to John F. Wiley Stadium on Thursday. The Yellow Jackets and Barons battled back-and-forth over 60 minutes of competition, before the visitors pulled out an 11-8 win.

Things started well for Waynesburg (0-6), which jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by juniors Holly Bachman and Abbie Miller. Bachman needed just 15 seconds to tally the game's opening point.

Waynesburg continued to lead until the 23:16 mark of the contest, when Franciscan (2-3) tied the score at 4-4. That tally was part of a 5-0 Baron run that stretched into the second half. By the time the surge ended, Franciscan found itself ahead 7-4.

Senior Morgan Vesco pulled her team to within two goals (7-5) with 20:33 showing on the game clock. After Franciscan rebuilt a three-point advantage, Bachman notched back-to-back tallies to cut the deficit down to just one at 8-7 with 11:23 left to play.

A final goal by Miler that came after Franciscan's ninth tally of the evening made the score 9-8 with just under seven minutes left in regulation. Unfortunately, the Barons recorded the last two goals of the game to seal up the victory.

Bachman and Miller accounted for the majority of Waynesburg's offensive output with four and three goals, respectively. Juniors Jess Rains and Brandi Rohal picked up assists in the loss.

Senior JoHanna Phillips played all 90 minutes in net and piled up 18 saves over 29 shots on goal.

The same two teams will meet up on Monday, April 4, in Steubenville. Start time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
