WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (March 8) – The Waynesburg University baseball team continued its run at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets got off to a solid start against Albion, but fielding woes ultimately did them in during a 9-5 loss to the Britons.
Waynesburg (1-5) opened the scoring in the second inning when junior centerfielder
Josh Hausler added to his productive spring with an RBI single that scored junior third baseman
Cameron Bernhardt. Unfortunately, that was the Jackets' only lead of the contest, as Albion (3-2) tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third. The Britons grabbed their first lead at 2-1 in the top of the fifth, before posting a three-spot in the top of the seventh to go up 5-1.
Waynesburg ended its scoring drought when freshman left fielder
Tyler Godwin connected on a sacrifice fly that brought home freshman
Tyler Reis. Albion's lead ballooned to 9-1 in the eighth, before Waynesburg attempted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth. Junior shortstop
Nathan Mori, Godwin and junior right fielder
Luke Carter notched an RBI each to bring about the final score of 9-5.
Sophomore
Brandon Lawless started and suffered the loss after allowing two runs, both of which were earned, on four hits and five walks. He struck out three opposing hitters, before turning the ball over to three relief pitchers, who gave up seven runs, only four of which were earned, on three hits and four walks.
Five Jackets notched two hits each, as the Jackets out-hit the opposition by a 14-to-seven margin. Godwin recorded a team-high two RBI on the day, while Reis scored a squad-best two runs.
Waynesburg has an off day tomorrow, before facing Muskingum in a nine-inning game on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
