Softball hosts Thomas More

Yellow Jackets suffer sweep at the hands of the Saints

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 10) – The Waynesburg University softball team hosted Thomas More on a cold, snowy Sunday. The Yellow Jackets were swept in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader by the final scores of 5-0 and 9-1 (six innings).

Waynesburg (11-15, 3-3) stayed right with the Saints (20-6, 5-1) for the first three innings of the opener, before giving up four runs in the deciding fourth inning. Thomas More picked up one more insurance run in the top of the seventh to close out the win.

Senior left fielder Katey Potopenko and freshman designated player Cat Allstatt notched two hits each in the early contest. Freshman Courtney Messenger suffered the loss in the circle after giving up nine hits and three walks in the complete-game effort. She picked up three strikeouts in her first of two starts on the day.

Thomas More scored a run in the first inning and three more in the second to secure all the offense it needed for the win in game two. Waynesburg finally put a run on the board in the bottom of the fourth when junior catcher Mackenzie Smith singled in Potopenko.

Messenger took the loss in the late contest after yielding four runs, three of which were earned, on five hits over two innings of work. She was the first of three Jacket pitchers to toe the rubber in the finale. Freshman first baseman Alex Lawrence recorded two of her team's four hits in the six-inning affair.

The Jackets are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, April 13, when they make a road trip to Geneva for a PAC doubleheader. The twin bill will also serve as a Lacing Up For a Cure Game, which raises money and attention for cancer research. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
