Jacket baseball wins sixth-straight

Miller's three-run homer keys 5-3 victory

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (April 13) – The Waynesburg University baseball team extended its current winning streak to six games when it traveled to Geneva for a  nine-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest. The Yellow Jackets rode a big third inning to a 5-3 victory over the Golden Tornadoes.

Waynesburg (8-15, 6-3) fell behind 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third. The Yellow Jacket bats exploded for five runs on three hits and two walks to give the visiting team a lead it never relinquished for the remainder of the game.

Freshman second baseman Tyler Reis got things going with a one-out single and senior left fielder Matt Bensinger followed with a walk to put runners on first and second. Junior first baseman Jonathon Kletzli drove in his team's first run with an RBI single in the ensuing at-bat. A walk to senior designated hitter Brent Williams loaded the bases for junior right fielder Luke Carter, who tied the game at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly. Junior catcher Ben Miller provided the game-deciding hit by crushing a three-run homer that put his team ahead 5-2.

Geneva (7-17, 2-12) picked up the inning's final out to stop the bleeding and pulled to within two runs with a score in the top of the fourth. However, Waynesburg was able to keep the host team off the scoreboard for the remainder of the conference clash to close out the victory.

Sophomore Brandon Lawless got the start on the mound and worked the first five innings to pick up win number one on the season. He gave up three runs, two of which were earned, on nine hits, eight of which were singles, and no walks. He struck out five Golden Tornadoes. Junior Derek Whalen continued his recent strong work out of the bullpen by tossing 3.1 scoreless innings. His efforts set up junior Parker Beatty, who notched his first collegiate save. Beatty faced three batters, two of which went down via strikeouts.

Carter picked up two hits in the victory, which saw Waynesburg out-hit by a sizeable 12-to-six margin.

The Jackets continue a busy week on Friday with a nine-inning home game against Grove City. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
