GROVE CITY, Pa. (April 16) – The Waynesburg University baseball team traveled to Grove City on Saturday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets dropped both halves of the twin-bill, falling 6-1 in game one and 7-4 in the late contest.
After the two teams played through a pair of scoreless innings in the opener, Waynesburg (8-18, 6-6) struck first when junior designated hitter
Jonathon Kletzli singled in junior centerfielder
Josh Hausler to take a 1-0 advantage. Unfortunately, that was the extent of Waynesburg's scoring output in game one. Grove City, meanwhile, took its first lead after plating two runs in the third. It added four more insurance runs in the fifth to close out the victory.
Senior
Brian Resnik started and took the loss after working the first 4.2 innings of the game. He gave up six runs, only three of which were earned, on six hits and two walks. Resnik recorded eight strikeouts in the loss. Junior
Scott Hefty closed out the opener.
The Jackets never led in game two, as they fell behind 4-0 after three innings of play. Waynesburg made the game interesting with three scores in the top of the fourth. Junior shortstop
Nathan Mori connected on a two-run single before sophomore left fielder
Tyler Godwin lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield for the final tally of the frame.
GCC rebounded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and a final tally in the sixth to go ahead 7-3. The Jackets took a run at a comeback in the top of the seventh when freshman right fielder
Tyler Reis drove an RBI double that produced the day's final score. Unfortunately, the rally ended in the ensuing at-bat.
Five different Yellow Jackets took to the mound in game two, including senior
Connor Furwa, who started and worked the first 2.2 innings of play. He was saddled with the loss after allowing four earned runs on six hits and a walk.
Hausler and Kletzli recorded a team-high three hits each over the doubleheader. Hausler also reached base on a walk and when he was hit by a pitch. Reis took advantage of three walks to boost his on-base percentage.
Waynesburg will look to bounce back from Saturday's sweep on Tuesday, April 19, when it travels to Washington & Jefferson for a PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
