Softball travels to Westminster

Solid pitching not enough, as Jackets are swept by Titans

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (April 20) – The Waynesburg University softball team didn't shy away from the challenge of facing the top team in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) on Wednesday. Freshman pitchers Cat Allstat and Courtney Messenger were terrific against Westminster, but their efforts didn't translate to victories as the Titans swept a doubleheader by the final scores of 2-0 and 1-0.

Allstat worked all six innings in the opener and allowed the two runs on seven hits and two walks. Freshman shortstop Keri Renzler and senior leftfielder Katey Potopenko each collected hits for Waynesburg (14-20, 5-7).

Game two was an even tighter dual, as the Yellow Jacket bats were able to match Westminster (19-11, 12-0) with five hits. Unfortunately, the home team was able to push the eventual game-winning run across home plate in the second inning. Messenger kept her team in contention for victory by allowing three singles, a double, a triple and a walk over a complete-game effort. She struck out two Titans in the late contest.

Five different Jackets, including Renzler and Potopenko, recorded hits in game two.

Waynesburg is back in action on Thursday, April 21, when its hosts another of the PAC's top teams in third-place Saint Vincent. First pitch of the seven-inning doubleheader is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
