WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 2) – Freshman pitcher
Courtney Messenger stole the show in Waynesburg's first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader of the 2016 season. The first-year righty pitched the Yellow Jackets to a pair of shutouts against visiting Chatham on Saturday.
Messenger improved to 5-5 on the year and lowered her team-best ERA to 3.45 after blanking the Cougars (2-13, 0-2) 7-0 and 2-0. Waynesburg (10-12, 2-0) won its fourth and fifth-straight games of the year.
Messenger scattered three singles and didn't walk a batter in the opener. She racked up eight strikeouts in her first win of the day. Freshman third baseman
Alex Lawrence teed off on a two-run bomb as part of a five-run fifth innings. Junior second baseman
Ashley Demarco collected two hits and scored a pair of runs. Freshman catcher
Keri Renzler went two-for-four with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored.
Messenger was even stingier in the late contest, as she took a perfect game into the sixth inning. She wound up allowing just one single and not walking a batter, while piling up 11 strikeouts. The Jackets needed just three hits and four walks to provide enough offense for Messenger. Freshman shortstop
Sabrina Stankus singled, stole a base and scored, while Lawrence singled, walked twice and scored the game's other run.
The Orange and Black will look to extend its longest winning streak of the year on Tuesday, April 5, when it heads to Thiel for a PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
