WAYNESBURG, Pa. (May 8) – It was a bitter-sweet Mother's Day for the Waynesburg University baseball team, which hosted Westminster for its final home doubleheader of 2016. The Yellow Jackets saw history made at their home park as part of senior day, but saw their chances for a spot in the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tournament fade away.
The Yellow Jackets completed a three-game weekend sweep of Westminster by downing the Titans by the final scores of 7-0 and 7-2. Unfortunately, at the same time, Washington & Jefferson was beating Thomas More to lock up the final spot in the PAC postseason.
However, there was still plenty of reason to celebrate on the cool Sunday afternoon. Senior
Brian Resnik put together a fitting final appearance in a Yellow Jacket (17-22, 15-9) uniform as he shut out the Titans (9-28, 6-18) in the opener. After limiting Westminster to three singles and a double over a seven-inning complete-game effort, Resnik recorded his 29
th collegiate victory, giving him the number-one spot in career wins in PAC history. The righty piled up nine strikeouts in his final dominant showing as a Jacket.
Junior first baseman
Jonathon Kletzli drove in the run Resnik needed for his historic victory in the bottom of the first. His one-out single allowed junior centerfielder
Josh Hausler to sprint home and give his team the 1-0 edge. The Jackets extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second and maintained the advantage until the bottom of the sixth, when they put up a four-spot to close out the victory.
Five different hitters picked up two hits each, as Waynesburg racked up 13 base knocks in the opener.
The Jackets got off to a similarly fast start in the late contest by plating three tallies in the bottom of the first. Ironically, Kletzli drove in the game's first run once again. However, game two's winning run came one batter later when freshman second baseman
Tyler Reis produced a two-run single that drove in senior leftfielder
Matt Bensinger and sophomore right fielder
Tyler Godwin to put Waynesburg ahead 3-0.
Waynesburg added a run in the third and another in the fourth to extend its advantage to 5-0. Westminster scored its only runs of the doubleheader on a two-run homer in the fifth. However, Bensinger scored his team's final two runs of the season in dramatic fashion by blasting a two-run bomb in his final collegiate at-bat.
Junior
Luke Carter closed out the year with a complete-game victory of his own. He allowed eight hits and no walks to improve to 4-4 on the year. Carter picked up four strikeouts in the win.
Kletzli, Godwin and Bensinger connected on four hits each and combined for seven RBI and six runs scored. Reis and Hausler each scored three runs during the sweep.
Waynesburg ended the season tied for fourth place in the PAC standings with Grove City. Unfortunately, GCC's three-game sweep earlier in the season gave the Wolverines the tiebreaker for the final spot in the conference playoffs.
