NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Sept. 10) – Things didn't start well for the Waynesburg University football team, which traveled to Westminster on Saturday to face the Titans in a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest. After falling behind 21-0 at halftime, the Yellow Jacket defense adjusted to the speedy Westminster offense and held the opposition to a single touchdown over the final 30 minutes of play. Unfortunately, Waynesburg only found the opposing end zone one time in a 28-7 setback.
Westminster (2-0) scored once in the opening quarter before tacking on 14 more points in quarter number two to take a three-touchdown advantage into the locker room. Surprisingly, the Titans only out-gained the Jackets (0-2) by a 197-to-121 margin in terms of total offense and only had three more first downs.
The two teams played a scoreless third quarter, before Westminster notched its fourth-straight touchdown to go up 28-0 early in the fourth. The Jackets finally broke through for their only points when sophomore quarterback
Jake Dougherty plunged across the goal line from a yard out with 6:13 remaining in the contest. Unfortunately, Westminster was able to grind away the remainder of the game clock on its ensuing possession to clinch the win.
The game was ultimately won on the ground, where the Titans out-rushed Waynesburg 231-to-106. Westminster notched three touchdown runs.
Dougherty threw for 103 yards on 12-of-26 passing. Junior
Mitch Kendra posted a team-best 41 yards on three catches, while freshman
Ta'Vaughn Johnson tied for the game lead with four receptions that went for 38 yards. Freshman
Chad Walker was Waynesburg's leading rusher with 38 yards on eight totes.
Junior linebacker
Brent Blacharczyk had maybe his best game as a Jacket. He piled up a game-high 11 tackles, including a contest-best eight solo stops, and notched one of the team's 12 tackles for loss. Senior defensive lineman
Aniellio DeStefano recorded three of those hits in the back field, which as a game high. The Jacket defensive front posted its second-straight strong outing by racking up 30 tackles, seven of which were behind the line of scrimmage.
Waynesburg is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 17, with another tough road trip. The Jackets will be in Pittsburgh to face Carnegie Mellon for both team's first official PAC game of 2016. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
