WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 14) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team played host to Geneva on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets blew open a one-point game by outscoring the Golden Tornadoes 19-3 in the second quarter en route to a 70-53 victory.
Waynesburg's (9-6, 5-3) big second period was keyed by senior forward
Haley Delaney, who knocked down back-to-back-to-back three pointers to extend the Jacket advantage to 10 points (25-15). That quarter-opening run extended to 15 points and gave the home team a 31-15 lead.
Geneva (4-11, 1-7) broke the streak with just over two minutes left until halftime. That three-pointer was the only basket for the Golden Tornadoes in the quarter, which ended with Waynesburg scoring the final two baskets of the half, both of which came courtesy of junior forward
Addy Knetzer.
After taking a 35-18 lead into halftime, the Jackets grew its advantage to as many as 25 points (62-37) in the fourth quarter. That large lead allowed head coach
Sam Jones to give his younger players valuable varsity court experience.
Knetzer led Waynesburg with a team-high 19 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for her 10
th double-double of the season. Delaney notched her third double-double of the year after posting 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Sophomore point guard
Monica Starre dished out a game-high five assists to go along with nine points and eight rebounds. Sophomore
Anna Bartman came off the bench to chip in 12 points to the winning effort, while junior
Mackenna Drazich added nine points and eight rebounds on the day.
The Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 18, with a road Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rivalry game at Washington & Jefferson. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
