CLEVELAND, Ohio (Jan. 21) – Five different Yellow Jackets posted 2-0 days at Saturday's Si Ostrach Invitational, which was hosted by Case Western Reserve. The Waynesburg wrestling team needed every point those individuals could muster, as it pulled out a pair of thrilling victories.
Waynesburg (10-13) wrestled the host Spartans (2-3) to a 22-22 tie, but won on criteria (most points scored) to open the day. The Yellow Jackets followed that up with another nail-biter, which they took 21-18 over John Carroll (4-5).
The hero of both victories was sophomore
Jake Evans, who notched a pair of walk-off pins to secure the sweep. Evans pinned Case's Brian McNamara in 1:13, before sticking JCU's Russ Porter in 3:49. Waynesburg's standout heavyweight came into the day with 15 pins on the year, which had him in second place in all of Division III.
Junior 125-pounder
Tristan Buxton started his day with a major decision against Case, and followed that up with a crucial 3-2 decision against John Carroll. Senior
Filippo Crivelli enjoyed one of his best weekends of the season. He opened with a 12-2 major decision, before posting maybe his most impressive win of the year. Not only did he defeat JCU's Sal Corrao, who is mentioned in the D3Wrestle.com rankings, but he pinned him in just 2:13.
Freshman
Dan Verhovsek continued a fine rookie season on the mats by going 2-0 with a pair of decision at 165 pounds. Senior
Ryan Shank had no problem racking up the points at 184 pounds. He blitzed his opponent from Case to the tune of a 20-3 technical fall, before earning an 11-5 decision in the day's final bout.
Waynesburg will take the upcoming week to prepare for its annual Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rivalry match with Thiel College on Friday. Start time in Greenville is scheduled for 7 p.m.
