WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 25) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team welcomed Grove City to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse for a Wednesday night Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup. The Yellow Jackets rebounded from a slow start to pick up a 74-60 victory over the Wolverines.
Waynesburg (11-7, 7-4) found itself in a 10-2 hole after six minutes of play. However, the home team answered the challenge with a game-high 15-0 run that not only lasted the remainder of the first quarter, but 1:13 into period number two. By the time Grove City (9-9, 5-6) stopped the Yellow Jacket surge, it found itself in a 17-10 hole with 8:47 remaining in the first half.
Waynesburg expanded its advantage to 16 points thanks to a strong finish to the second period. By the time junior forward
Addy Knetzer dropped in a layup with three seconds left to play until the halftime break, the Jackets had built a 37-21 advantage.
The home team led for the remainder of the contest, establishing leads as large as 19 points in the third quarter. The Jackets put the finishing touches on the win, which helped put the orange and black into fourth place in the PAC standings.
Waynesburg dominated the glass, as they out-rebounded the Wolverines by a 47-29 margin. The Yellow Jackets also knocked down 27-of-39 foul shots, while Grove City connected on 16-of-22 tries.
Four Jackets scored between nine and 14 points in the victory. Senior guard
Kassidy O'Keefe led the way with a team-high 14 points. Knetzer added 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds, while senior guard
Katie Gehlmann added 12, all of which came from a perfect 12-for-12 showing at the free throw stripe. Senior forward
Haley Delaney went for nine points and a game-high four assists.
Waynesburg returns to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 28, for a home PAC matchup with Thiel. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
