WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 28) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team hosted Thiel for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets played right with the Tomcats through the first half, but the visiting team won the second half and the game to the tune of a 74-58 final score.
Thiel (10-7, 6-6) came firing out of the gate and built up a 13-2 lead after 4:30 of play. Waynesburg (6-13, 4-8) took a big bite out of the early deficit with a 9-2 surge that made the score 15-11 with 11 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Tomcats rebuilt a comfortable lead that topped out at 36-22 with 3:10 showing in the first half clock. Once again, however, the Jackets showed their mettle by finishing the first 20 minutes of action on a 14-2 run that brought about the halftime score of 38-36. Senior guard
Timmy Kaiser tallied five of the points in the run, while junior wing
Jon Knab contributed six points.
Unfortunately, the halftime break seemed to slow the Jacket momentum, as Thiel opened up period number two on a 9-1 spurt that made the score 46-37 in favor of the Tomcats. Waynesburg got as close as seven points of tying the game, as Thiel put the contest away over the final minutes of the day.
Knab tied for the game lead in scoring with 18 points, 10 of which came at the free throw line. Kaiser joined Knab as a double-digit scorer for Waynesburg with 10 points. Sophomore wing
Brennan Smith paced the home team on the boards by pulling down a team-high eight rebounds.
After playing three-straight games at home, Waynesburg will hit the road to face Saint Vincent on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
