BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Oct. 7) – The Waynesburg University football team traveled to Geneva on Saturday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown. The Yellow Jackets scored first, but the Golden Tornadoes had the last laugh, as they picked up a 35-14 victory.
After receiving the opening kickoff, Waynesburg (0-6, 0-4) took to the ground to power its opening possession. Freshman
Jeremiah Doswell-Hardrick led the charge to pay dirt by carrying the ball five times for 23 yards, the final six of which allowed him to score his first collegiate touchdown. Junior
Garret Guthrie knocked in the extra point to put the Jackets ahead 7-0 5:18 into the first quarter.
Geneva (3-2, 2-1) responded by scoring two first-quarter touchdowns of its own. The Golden Tornadoes made it 21-straight by breaking the goal line yet again, this time with 4:44 left to play in the first half. That third score capped a 15-play, 85-yard marathon possession that lasted 8:54.
Trailing 21-7, the Jackets found the end zone one last time on the afternoon. Junior running back
Austin Wilson concluded a brief seven-play, 63-yard possession that cut the GT lead in half. Unfortunately for the visitors, they never drew any closer to the eventual victors than the 21-14 halftime score. After both teams emerged from their respective locker rooms, Geneva recorded two third-quarter touchdowns to close out the scoring.
Waynesburg rushed for a season-high 180 yards on 31 carries (5.8 yards per carry) and was led on the ground by Wilson, who became the first Jacket to break the 100-yard plateau since 2015. Doswell-Hardrick added 74 yards on 12 totes, all of which came in the first half.
The Jacket defense was paced by the duo of senior defensive lineman
James Roundtree III and sophomore defensive back
VaShon Graham, who totaled 12 and 11 tackles, respectively.
Waynesburg returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 14, when it travels to Thomas More. Kickoff with the Saints is scheduled for 12 p.m.
