ALLIANCE, Ohio (Nov. 18) – The 24
th-ranked Waynesburg University wrestling team traveled to the Mount Union Duals on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets posted a 3-1 record after downing Greensboro, Alma and Heidelberg and falling to number-22 Mount Union.
Waynesburg's (3-2) day opened with a 37-16 win over Alma (0-5) . Senior
Tristan Buxton got things going with a 11-1 major decision at 125 pounds. Freshman
Josh Kuslock started a 4-0 day with a pin in 4:36 at 133 pounds to give the Yellow Jackets a 10-0 lead.
Alma tied the match at 10-10 following victories at 141 and 149 pounds. Sophomore
Zach Mackall got Waynesburg back on the board with a pin in 2:04 that started a four-bout win streak for the Orange and Black.
Senior
Derek Hull began a solid 3-1 day for himself with a 14-7 win at 165 pounds. Senior
Landon Lohr picked up six team points when his opponent took an injury default. Lohr held a 6-3 lead at the time of the stoppage.
Junior
Mike Millero sealed his team's first win of the day with a pin in 5:47 at 184 pounds that made the score 31-10. Alma bounced back with a fall at 197 pounds, but junior heavyweight
Jake Evans started a perfect day for himself with a fall that took just 20 seconds to accomplish.
Waynesburg's second win of the day came by way of a 53-0 shutout victory over Greensboro (0-6). The Jackets were aided by three forfeits. Of the seven contested bouts, the Jackets won four by pins from Buxton, Evans, freshman
Michael Mahon (184) and freshman
Marco Parry (141). Kuslock chipped in a 16-1 technical fall, while Millero and Lohr logged decision triumphs.
Next up for the Jackets was a traditionally strong opponent in Heidelberg (2-2). Waynesburg put together a complete match in downing the Student Princes 34-8.
Buxton improved to 7-0 on the season with a 5-3 decision victory at 125. The Jackets rolled the dice a bit and allowed freshman
Tony Mastrangelo to take a forfeit at 133 and give Waynesburg a 9-0 lead. Kuslock bumped up to 141 pounds and made the gamble pay off with a 9-7 win.
The Jackets' match-opening win streak ended at three as Heidelberg scored its first three points at 149 pounds. The victors started a new three-weight run thanks to Mackall's gritty 11-10 victory at 157 pounds. Hull followed with a 6-1 triumph before a first-period pin by Baxter made the score 24-3.
A technical fall at 184 pounds gave the Student Princes their final points of the match, before sophomore
Ken Burrs hit the mat for the first of his two bouts. Burrs recorded a first-period pin before Evans recorded his third-straight bonus-point victory, which was an 8-0 major decision.
Waynesburg was rolling heading into its top-25 showdown with the host Purple Raiders. Unfortunately, Mount Union came out on top of four bouts determined three points or loss to sew up the 25-12 win.
Buxton scored late in his match at 125 pounds, but it wasn't enough as he fell 5-2. Waynesburg tied the match at 3-3 thanks to a 7-3 victory for Kuslock at 133 pounds.
Unfortunately, that was the Jackets' last victory until 197 pounds, as Mount Union rolled off a six-weight winning streak to clinch the match. Mackall opened up a 6-0 lead in his bout at 157 pounds and maintained the lead until late in the contest. Unfortunately, he gave up crucial near-fall points late in the bout that decided the 12-10 victory.
Hull battled Jesse Gross, who is mentioned in the D3Wrestle.com national rankings to a 1-1 tie through regulation. Unfortunately, Gross picked up the takedown in overtime that gave him a 3-1 win.
Baxter scored first at 174 pounds, but trailed 3-2 after the first period. The deficit grew to 5-3 after five minutes of action, but an escape in the third period pulled the Waynesburg rookie to within two points with less than a minute left in the bout. Once again, the Raiders scored last in a tight bout to seal up the 7-3 victory.
Mount Union logged one more win at 184 pounds, before Burrs ended his team's skid with his second pin in as many trips to the mat. The fall came with one minute remaining in the bout.
Evans used a second-period escape and a riding point to log a 2-0 decision at 285 pounds. The number-four ranked heavyweight in Division III gave up one point over a perfect day of wrestling.
The Jackets are off until after Thanksgiving, and return to competition to take part in the two-day Petrofes Invitational, which is hosted by Messiah. Start time on Friday, Dec. 1, is scheduled for 12 p.m.
