WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 8) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team hosted Division II Shippensburg on Wednesday night for each team's first dual match of the season. The Raiders defeated the Yellow Jackets 31-10.
Things started well for the Jackets (0-1), as senior 125-pounder
Tristan Buxton used a late six-point move to secure a 15-4 major decision. Unfortunately, that was the home team's last victory for quite some time, as Shippensburg (1-0) won the next six weight classes to put the dual victory out of reach.
Freshman Mike Mahon ended his team's skid by winning his collegiate debut at 184 pounds by way of a 6-4 decision. The 197-pound featured a pair of nationally recognized opponents and it proved to be the most exiting bout of the evening.
Shippensburg sent out red-shirt senior Evan Ramos, who came into the night ranked third in the country in Division II. Waynesburg countered with reigning PAC champion
Ken Burrs, who is currently featured in the D3Wrestle.com national rankings. The bout was tied at 4-4, before Ramos built a 6-5 edge. Burrs got in on a single leg shot with around 10 seconds remaining in the contest, but Ramos was able to slip away and hang on for the victory.
Junior heavyweight
Jake Evans, who is ranked fourth in the country by both D3Wrestle.com and Intermat, ended the night on a high note for the home team by using a reversal in the first ride-out period to grab a 4-2 victory.
The Jackets get their first taste of tournament action on Saturday, Nov. 11, when they head to the Washington & Jefferson Invitational. Start time is scheduled for 9:45 a.m.
