Drazich trey wins it for Waynesburg

Senior's buzzer beater leads Jackets to 64-61 victory at Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. (Dec. 30) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team built up a 14-point halftime lead, but needed some heroics from one of its senior leaders against Frostburg State on Saturday. Mackenna Drazich scored the last three of her game-high 21 points to push the Yellow Jackets to a 64-61 victory over the Bobcats.

As previously mentioned, the Jackets (7-4) put together a solid first 20 minutes on the court to take a 38-24 advantage into the locker room. However, FSU (6-5) clawed its way back into the contest, thanks in part to an eight-for-nine showing at the free throw line after not attempting a foul shot in over the first two quarters.

After Drazich knocked down one-of-two free throw attempts, Waynesburg held a slim 59-57 edge with just under 40 seconds remaining in the contest. The Bobcats tied the score up just three second later with two foul shots of their own.

Junior point guard Monica Starre seemed to provide Waynesburg the game-winning points on a layup with just six seconds showing on the clock. However, the Bobcats managed to answer with just a second remaining in regulation and retie the score at 61-61.

Following a timeout by Waynesburg head coach Sam Jones, the Jackets drew up one final play to take a shot at victory. Senior guard Rachel Eng inbounded in front of her team's bench and found a wide-open Drazich, who banked in the game winner from around eight feet beyond the arc.

Drazich's contest-deciding trey was her sixth successful try on eight attempts from long range. She was seven-for-17 from the field, pulled down six rebounds and dished out three assists.

Senior forward Addy Knetzer's contributed 14 points, 12 of which came in the first half, before fouling out after just 20 minutes on the court. Starre contributed 13 points on five-of-seven shooting, a game-high six assists and three steals over a team-best 36 minutes on the floor.

Along with setting up the game-winning basket, Eng scored nine points on four-of-five shooting from the field and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. She added three assists and two blocks to the Jackets' most recent victory.

Waynesburg outrebounded Frostburg by a 42-32 margin and held a major advantage from three-point range. The Jackets connected on seven-of-15 from downtown, while the Bobcats were successful on just three-of-17 attempts.

With its final non-conference game behind them, the Yellow Jackets return to the court on Wednesday, January 3, with a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup at Chatham. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
