NEW CONCORD, Ohio (Dec. 7) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team hit the road on Thursday for a dual match at Muskingum. The Yellow Jackets broke open a 6-6 tie by winning six of the last seven weight classes and taking a 33-12 win over the Muskies.
After Muskingum (0-3) pulled out an overtime win at 125 pounds, freshman
Josh Kuslock gave Waynesburg (4-2) its first lead of the night with a first-period pin at 133 pounds. Another tight decision victory at 141 pounds tied the score at 6-6, but freshman
R.J. Hall gave the visiting team a lead they didn't relinquish thanks to a 6-3 decision at 149.
Sophomore
Zach Mackall boosted the Jacket advantage to 15-6 with a pin in 5:51. Muskingum's last win came at 165 pounds, before the Jackets claimed victory in the final four weight classes.
Freshman
Caleb Baxter picked up a forfeit at 174 pounds. Fellow rookie
Michael Mahon had a much tougher path to victory as he battled Anthony Cole-Young over seven back-and-forth minutes. Trailing by one point with just seconds showing on the clock, Mahon scored the deciding takedown and rode his opponent out over the final few seconds to grab a 10-9 triumph.
Waynesburg's final two wins came with bonus points. Sophomore
Ken Burrs put together an impressive showing with a 10-1 major decision at 197 pounds. Junior
Jake Evans one-upped Burrs at heavyweight with a 26-10 technical fall. Evans' victory was a historic one as he became the newest member of the Yellow Jackets' 100-victory club. In just two-plus years, Evans now boasts an overall mark of 100-16 with 50 pins.
The Jackets return home for the first time since Nov. 8, when they hold their annual quad-match at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Waynesburg hosts The Apprentice School, Penn State Behrend and ninth-ranked Baldwin Wallace starting at 12 p.m.
