WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 11) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hosted the defending national champions from Thomas More for senior day on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets fell 89-56 to the number-two ranked Saints.
After falling behind 29-12 after one quarter of play, the Yellow Jackets (13-10, 9-7) rebounded with a second period that saw the Saints (23-0, 16-0) outscore the home team 19-18. After 20 minutes of play, Thomas More held a 48-30 advantage.
The visiting team went on to the win by outscoring the Jackets 41-26 in the second half.
Senior guard
Katie Gehlmann, who was honored before the game, showed she could play with the best in the country by piling up a team-high 20 points. She went seven-for-14 from the floor, including four-for-nine from three-point range.
Junior
Mackenna Drazich pulled down a game-high nine rebounds off the bench. Junior forward
Addy Knetzer contributed nine points and eight rebounds in a losing effort, while another senior honoree, forward
Haley Delaney posted eight rebounds.
Waynesburg plays its final home regular season game of the year on Wednesday, when it hosts Washington & Jefferson. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
