WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 4) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hosted Westminster for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets and Titans battled over the entirety of the meeting, but Westminster ended the day on an 8-2 run that allowed it to pull away for the 65-58 win.
Waynesburg (12-9, 8-6) trailed 51-43 with just 6:34 remaining in the game, but was able to pull itself back into the game with a 9-2 run that cut its deficit down to a single point (53-52) with just under four minutes left in the contest. Junior forward
Addy Knetzer recorded an old-fashioned three point play during the surge, while senior forward
Haley Delaney connected on one of her team's two three pointers in the loss.
The Jackets still trailed by a point (57-56) as the game went into the home stretch. Unfortunately, Westminster (9-12, 4-10) owned those final 1:11. The Titans scored eight of the game's final 10 points, five of which came from the free throw line.
Though it didn't lead to victory, junior forward
Addy Knetzer led all players in both points (16) and rebounds (14) for her 13
th double-double of the season. Delaney added 12 points and six rebounds and was a defensive force under the basket. The veteran post swatted away a game and team season-high seven blocks. Sophomore point guard
Monica Starre chipped in nine points and eight rebounds.
Waynesburg is back in action on Wednesday, when it travels to Chatham. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
