GROVE CITY, Pa. (March 1) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team traveled to Grove City on Wednesday night for the first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament. The Yellow Jackets used a big second half to upend their Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival 65-58.
Waynesburg's (17-11) win advances it to the second round of the tournament. The Yellow Jackets will face Moravian at Carnegie Mellon University on Friday, May 3, after the Greyhounds defeated Centenary 95-50 on Wednesday night.
The Wolverines (14-13) jumped out to a 15-10 lead after the first quarter of play and managed to take that five-point advantage into halftime. Grove City held at 34-29 lead when both teams retired to their respective locker rooms.
The third quarter belonged to the Jackets, who outscored the host team 18-9. After falling behind 41-33, Waynesburg exploded for a 14-0 run that lasted 5:38. Grove City scored the last basket of the third to end the surge, but the visiting team had already built a 47-43 lead.
GCC tallied the first field goal of the fourth quarter to cut the Waynesburg advantage in half. However, the Jackets fired back with a 9-0 run that set the Orange and Black up for victory with a 56-45 lead. The visiting team never trailed for the remainder of the evening.
Waynesburg was led by junior first-team All-PAC forward
Addy Knetzer, who led all players in both points (22) and rebounds (14). She connected on eight-of-11 field goal tries, six-of-eight free throw attempts and yanked down an impressive eight offensive boards. She now has 17 double-doubles on the year.
Senior guard
Kassidy O'Keefe contributed 11 points and five rebounds to the winning effort, while junior
Mackenna Drazich came off the bench for nine points and five boards of her own.
Tipoff for Waynesburg's ECAC quarterfinal showdown with Moravian is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Friday.
