Softball concludes spring break trip

Waynesburg falls to Cabrini and Capital

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 2) – The Waynesburg University softball team wrapped up its stay at the Spring Games in Clermont, Florida on Thursday with its final two contests of the trip. The Yellow Jackets fell 11-8 to Cabrini, before suffering an 11-4 setback against Capital.

The Jackets (2-6) opened the scoring in the early contest thanks to freshman catcher Rachel Skon, whose first-inning single allowed sophomore leftfielder Rachel Skon to score the game's first run. Unfortunately, that was Waynesburg's only lead of the opener, as Cabrini (1-5) tallied the next nine runs over four innings of play.

Waynesburg didn't give up, however, as the bats came alive in the top of the fifth for a big sixth inning. Five of Cabrini's six errors played a big part in the rally, as 10 Jacket hitters came to the plate. Freshman centerfielder Courtney Syfert recorded an RBI single, while sophomore shortstop Keri Renzler drilled a run-scoring double.

Trailing 9-7, the Cavaliers bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 11-7. Sophomore first baseman Alex Lawrence drove in the final run of the game with a single in the seventh that brought about the game's final score.

Syfert and Skon paced the Jacket attack in the opener with two hits each. The Jackets also stole four bases to help out the offensive efforts.

Sophomore Courtney Messenger suffered the loss in the circle after allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits over a complete-game effort.

Game two saw Capital (4-1) jump out to a 7-1 lead after three innings of play. The Crusaders added four more in the top of the sixth, before Waynesburg recorded its final three scores of the game in the bottom of the frame.

Freshman first baseman Cheyenne Wasko went two-for-three at the dish with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Lawrence concluded a very productive spring trip by going two-for-three with a pair of singles.

Sophomore pitcher Cat Allstat took the loss with a seven-inning complete game in the circle.

After a full week of action down south, the Yellow Jackets are off until Wednesday, March 15, when they play their first games north of the Mason-Dixon Line.  Waynesburg will play a doubleheader at Penn State Fayette. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
