Softball hosts Point Park

Jackets get swept in DH with NAIA opponent

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 29) – The Waynesburg University softball team played host to NAIA member Point Park University for a  seven-inning doubleheader on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets fell in both halves of the twin-bill.

Waynesburg (4-11-1) dropped 9-0 decision in five innings in game one, before a furious comeback came up just short in the late contest. The Pioneers (9-10) held on for a 6-5 victory in game two.

After being no-hit in the opener, the Jackets found themselves in a 6-1 hole heading to the bottom of the sixth inning of the second tilt. Waynesburg's offense finally found its stride with a four-spot that cut the deficit down to a single tally.

The opportunistic Jackets combined three hits with two errors and a passed ball to score four times and make the score 6-5. Waynesburg was able to keep Point Park off the board in the top of the seventh, but couldn't push a tying run across home plate in the bottom of the frame.

Freshmen Ashley Dubovich and Rachel Skon paced the Jacket attack in game two with two hits each. Dubovich notched a double in the one-run setback. Sophomore Courtney Messenger took the pitching loss in game two. She allowed12 hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Waynesburg continued a busy week on the diamond with another doubleheader on Thursday. First pitch against visiting Mount Aloysius is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
