Baseball hosts W&J

Waynesburg drops two to Presidents

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 1) – The Waynesburg University baseball team began its three-game weekend series with Washington & Jefferson under cold, rainy skies on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets were swept in the seven-inning doubleheader by the final scores of 5-2 and 16-2.

Slow starts plagued the Jackets (8-10, 3-4) in both contests. Waynesburg fell behind 5-0 going into the bottom of the third inning of game one. Senior centerfielder Josh Hausler broke up the shutout with an RBI double in the bottom of the frame and senior first baseman Jonathon Kletzler teed off on his third homerun of the season.

Senior Luke Carter took the loss on the mound after giving up seven hits and a walk over a complete-game effort. He struck out five Presidents (11-3, 6-0) in the opener.

W&J struck for four runs in the first inning of game two and tacked on another score in the second to grab a quick 5-0 advantage. Freshman catcher John Przybylinski brought home Waynesburg's first run of game two with a single and an error in the bottom of the second. The Jackets closed the gap to 5-2 later in the frame when sophomore right fielder Eli Kucherawy drove in junior leftfielder Tyler Godwn.

Unfortunately, the visitors closed the game by plating the final 11 runs of the day to complete the sweep.

Waynesburg used five pitchers in game two, four of which came in out of the bullpen after senior Derek Whalen started and worked the first three innings on the mound. Whalen allowed eight runs, seven of which were earned, on nine hits. He struck out two and didn't issue a walk.

The same two teams are scheduled to meet up tomorrow in Washington for a nine-inning contest. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
