BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (April 14) – The Waynesburg University baseball team traveled to Geneva on Friday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets picked up the sweep against the Golden Tornadoes.
Waynesburg (11-16, 5-7) never trailed on the day against Geneva (8-20, 2-12). The Jackets took game one 9-2, before scoring a 7-3 triumph in game two.
The Orange and Black opened the scoring thanks to a run off a Geneva error in the top of the first inning. Waynesburg's lead grew to 2-0 an RBI single by junior leftfielder
Tyler Godwin.
Geneva tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the first, before sophomore second baseman
Tyler Reis connected on a go-ahead, two-run double in the second. Those two scores proved to be the game winners in the opener.
Waynesburg provided more than enough insurance in the fifth and seventh innings to seal up the victory. Senior first baseman
Jonathon Kletzli recorded a sacrifice fly RBI that made the score 5-2. A sacrifice fly, two singles and an error led to a four-spot in the seventh.
Senior
Derek Whalen got the start on the mound and picked up the win after logging a seven-inning, complete-game effort. He allowed two earned runs on seven singles and a walk.
Game two opened with two scoreless innings, before Waynesburg jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the third. A double steal opened the scoring for the Jackets, before Kletzli doubled home senior centerfielder
Josh Hausler.
Once again, Geneva immediately answered the visiting team's challenge by tying the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the frame. The Orange and Black wasted little time in retaking the advantage.
The fourth inning saw the duo of Hausler and Kletzli impose their combined will once again. Hausler doubled in a go-ahead run, before a Kletzli single plated a pair of runs that gave Waynesburg a 5-2 lead.
The Jackets tacked on two more runs in the fifth thanks to an RBI single by freshman designated hitter
Brandon Floyd and an error by the Golden Tornadoes. Geneva came back with a run in the seventh, but that was as close as it came to completing the comeback.
Freshman
Mason Miller earned his first collegiate win on the mound after giving up two runs, both of which were earned, on six hits and two walks. Miller piled up seven strikeouts over five innings, before turning the ball over to senior
Jacob Meyer, who tossed the final two frames. He gave up one run on three hits.
Godwin, Hausler, Reis and senior shortstop
Nate Mori logged three hits each over the sweep. Kletzli racked up four RBI on the day.
Waynesburg is back in action on Tuesday, April 18, when it travels to Bethany for a seven-inning PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
