WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 29) – The Waynesburg University softball team gave graduating seniors
Lyndi Gareis and
Savannah Walker a great going away present during Saturday's season finale against Washington & Jefferson. The Yellow Jackets swept the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader by the final scores of 4-2 and 7-6.
The Jackets (15-22-1, 8-10) built a 2-0 lead in the opener thanks to a W&J (4-23, 3-15) error in the third inning and an RBI single by sophomore shortstop Kerri Renzler in the fourth. The Presidents responded with two scores in the top of the fifth, but the Jackets tacked on the game-deciding runs in the bottom of the frame. Junior first baseman
Alex Lawrence slapped a two-run single to give the home the team lead for good.
Sophomore
Courtney Messenger logged the win in the circle after scattering 10 singles over a seven-inning, complete-game effort. She walked one President and struck out two others.
Waynesburg came flying out of the gate in game two, scoring three runs in the first inning and three more in the second to take a commanding 6-0 lead. However, W&J wasn't ready to concede defeat, as it answered with three-spots of its own in the fourth and sixth frames, respectively.
Facing the prospect of extra innings in the bottom of the seventh, freshman third baseman
Cheyenne Wasko ended her first year with the Jackets by connecting on a walk-off RBI single that sent classmate
Ashley Dubovich sprinting home with the game-winning run.
Messenger picked up her second win of the day in relief of Gareis, who started and worked the first four innings in the circle. The veteran righty allowed three runs, all earned on five hits and a walk. Messenger yielded three unearned runs over three innings on four hits and a walk.
Lawrence was a force at the plate for Waynesburg. She went four-for-six with a homerun, seven RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore
Cat Allstatt added an impressive three-for-four performance with a walk and a run scored.
