CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. (April 5) – The Waynesburg University baseball team hit the road on Wednesday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Thomas More. The Yellow Jackets gave the defending conference champions all they could handle, but came up just short in a 4-3 contest.
After neither team was able to score in the first inning, Waynesburg (8-13, 3-6) used a Thomas More (11-5, 4-2) error to plate the game's first run in the top of the second. The Saints answered quickly in the bottom of the frame with a run of their own to tie things up at 1-1.
Pitching ruled innings three though six, as the score stayed tied until the bottom of the seventh, when the home team struck for three runs off Waynesburg starting pitcher
Luke Carter. Trailing 4-1, the Jackets showed their mettle by battling back against the host squad.
Sophomore second baseman
Tyler Reis cut his team's deficit down to two runs with a solo homerun in the eighth. Senior centerfielder
Josh Hausler made the score 4-3 with a two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth. Hausler and senior shortstop
Nate Mori, who walked earlier in the inning, moved to second and third base, respectively following a passed ball. Unfortunately, Thomas More was able to get the final out, stranding the tying and go-ahead run on the bases.
Prior to the seventh, Carter was nearly unhittable. He gave up all four of his team's runs on five hits and two walks over 6.2 innings on the mound. He struck out six Saints during the day and retired 10-straight batters from the second to the sixth inning. Senior
Scott Hefty worked the final inning-plus of the setback and was a perfect four-for-four in retiring opposing batters.
Hausler and senior catcher
Ben Miller both went two-for-four to pace the Waynesburg offense.
The Jackets are back on the road when they travel to La Roche on Friday for a single nine-inning meeting with the Redhawks. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
