WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 5) – The Waynesburg University softball team welcomed Thiel to town for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets dropped both end of the twin-bill to the Tomcats.
Thiel (8-12, 3-1) took game one 8-2 and followed that up with a 12-1 victory that lasted five innings.
Waynesburg (6-13-1, 2-2) trailed just 2-1 going into the top of the fifth inning of the opener. Unfortunately, Thiel exploded for six runs before finishing off the victory.
Sophomore
Courtney Messenger took the loss in the circle for the home team. She gave up eight runs, all earned on 11 hits and two walks, while striking out two over five innings of work. Sophomore
Cat Allstatt relieved Messenger and gave up just one hit over the final two frames.
Allstatt was the starting pitcher for game two, but was severely hampered by seven Jacket errors. She took the loss after giving up eight runs, only four of which were earned, on nine hits and a walk. Senior
Lyndi Gareis allowed four runs, all earned, on five hits over two innings.
Nine different Waynesburg players recorded hits over the sweep. Seven of them collected two knocks each. Sophomore first baseman
Alex Lawrence cracked her PAC-leading 14
th double.
The Jackets will look to bounce back on Saturday, April 8, when they head to Thomas More for a PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 12 p.m.
