GROVE CITY, Pa. (May 8) – The Waynesburg University baseball team and its counterparts from Grove City locked horns in a winner-take-all nine-inning game for the fourth-and-final spot in the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tournament. The Yellow Jackets battled back from a massive early deficit, but saw their season come to a disappointing end in a 14-12 battle.
Waynesburg (18-21, 12-12) found itself in a 12-0 hole after four innings and it looked like Grove City (17-17, 14-10) would cruise to the win in front of its home crowd. However, the Jackets refused to give up the fight, despite the overwhelming odds.
Waynesburg trimmed away half its deficit in the top of the fifth inning. The visiting team loaded the bases before senior third baseman
Cameron Bernhardt and senior catcher
Ben Miller connected on RBI singles. Freshman centerfielder
Addis Crouch was hit by a pitch to bring in run number three, before senior designated hitter
Josh Hausler walked in another score. The rally ended with a two-run single by sophomore second baseman
Tyler Reis that made the score 12-6.
The Wolverines got one run back in the bottom of the frame, but the Jackets rebounded with an RBI double from Hausler in the sixth. Waynesburg continued to slowly pull its way back into the contest during the seventh inning.
Reis got things going by teeing off on his PAC-leading 11
th homerun of the season, a solo shot that made the score 13-9. Crouch came up with a huge two-run single from the number-nine spot in the batting order and Hausler immediately followed with an RBI single of his own. After five-straight batters reached base with two outs on the board, Grove City was able to shut down the rally.
The home team managed one more run in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch. That miscue was the last in a series of costly Waynesburg mistakes that played a major role in the Jacket loss. The Jackets put the tying runs on base in the eighth, but were shut down from that point forward, as Grove City recorded the final four outs of the contest.
Miller paced the Waynesburg offense in his final collegiate game by recording a team-high four hits in five at-bats. He drove in two runs and scored three more by the time the day came to an end. Four different Yellow Jackets picked up two hits each, while Hausler, Reis and Crouch each drove in three runs. Senior first baseman
Jonathon Kletzli and junior leftfielder
Tyler Godwin both scored two runs.
Five Waynesburg errors loomed large for the Jackets, especially for senior starting pitcher
Jacob Meyer, who took the loss after yielding five runs, none of which were earned. Freshman
Jonny Kutchman, senior
Luke Carter and freshman
Mason Miller combined to finish out the game.
