BETHANY, W.Va. (Jan. 20) – A slow start to Saturday's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tilt at Bethany put the Waynesburg University men's basketball team in a 40-26 halftime hole. The Yellow Jackets played a tighter second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Bison, who won their fifth-straight game, this one by a 93-77 final score.
Waynesburg (7-10, 3-7) was led by senior wing
Jon Knab, who poured in a team-high 25 points. Sophomore guard
Sam Heeter had a big night coming off the bench. He knocked down six-of-10 field goal attempts, including four-of-seven three-point tries, en route to 17 points over 18 minutes. Fellow sophomores
Shane Johnson and
Frank Bozicevic added 10 points each on the day. Bozicevic also dished out a game-high eight assists.
Bethany (8-9, 8-2) never trailed in its latest victory and built up first-half leads as large as 19 points (32-13), before taking its 14-point advantage into the locker room at halftime. Waynesburg ended the defeat by scoring the final six points of the contest, four of which came from Heeter.
"Give credit to Bethany, I thought they played very well," said Waynesburg head coach
Mark Christner. "Defensively, we tried some different things, but we couldn't stop them today. I thought our talk and effort were good in sports and were able to take care of the basketball."
The Jackets return to the court on Wednesday when they head to Grove City for another PAC matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
