UHRICHSVILLE, Ohio (Jan. 20) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team wrapped up a busy weekend on the mats with a pair of matches at Kent State-Tuscarawas on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets edged Case Western Reserve prior to defeating the host Golden Eagles.
Waynesburg (11-7) upended the Spartans (3-3) by a 25-19 final score, thanks in large part to bonus points in four of its five victories. Senior
Tristan Buxton logged one of his team's three pins against Case Western, sticking his opponent in 1:07.
The Spartans took their first lead (7-6) with back-to-back victories at 133 and 141 pounds, before sophomore
R.J. Hall put the Jackets up 10-7 with a major decision at 149 pounds. After the Jackets gave up a forfeit at 157 pounds, senior
Derek Hull tied the match at 13-13 thanks to a 6-2 decision.
Freshman
Caleb Baxter collected a crucial pin in just :47 seconds to give the lead back to the Orange and Black at 19-13. Case bounced back with decisions at 184 and 197 pounds to retie the contest at 19-19, but junior heavyweight
Jake Evans notched his team-leading 17
th pin of the season and 30
th overall triumph to close out the victory.
Buxton picked up pin number two of the day to open the Jackets' match with the Golden Eagles (6-9), which went to Waynesburg by a 36-21 final score. Sophomore
Josh Kuslock received a forfeit at 133 pounds, as did freshman
Marco Parry at 157.
Baxter scored his second pin of the day at 174, before Evans notched the Jackets' final win of the weekend with a forfeit.
Waynesburg will host its final home dual of the season this Friday, when Thiel comes to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse for a PAC dual. Start time for the match, which will also serve as the team's senior night, is scheduled for 7 p.m.
