GROVE CITY, Pa. (Oct. 13) – The Waynesburg University football team was riding high heading into Saturday's road game at Grove City. The Yellow Jackets were on a three-game winning streak and looking to avenge last year's 21-14 loss to the Wolverines. Unfortunately, turnovers and some early defensive lapses doomed the visiting team in a 28-3 loss to the home-standing Wolverines.
GCC (4-3, 3-3) jumped out to a 14-0 lead just over five minutes into the contest on a pair of 60-plus-yard touchdown passes. Waynesburg looked poised to get on the board early in the second quarter, but junior quarterback
Tyler Perone was intercepted at the one-yard-line.
Neither team found much offensive traction throughout the second and third quarters. Waynesburg's offense found its rhythm early in the fourth and the Jackets drove to the Grove City seven to set up a first-and-goal situation. Unfortunately, Waynesburg only went backwards from there and had to settle for a 29-yard field goal from senior kicker
Garret Guthrie that made the score 14-3.
The Waynesburg secondary was torched for another long touchdown pass, this one covering 66 yards, on the next possession to make the score 21-3. The Yellow Jackets didn't give up on the game and worked their way down to the Wolverine 23 for a first-and-10. Once again, the home defense rose to the challenged and force a turnover on downs at the 15.
Grove City put the game away with an 85-yard scoring drive following the turnover.
Though the Waynesburg offense struggled overall, junior wide receiver
Nick Moretti pulled in a game-high five catches for 101 yards. He was one of seven Yellow Jackets to catch at least one pass from Perone, who completed 19 of 39 pass attempts for 195 yards and three interceptions.
Junior
Chad Walker led the Jacket ground game with 64 yards on 17 carries.
Senior linebacker
Tyler Smith was the driving force behind the Waynesburg defense. He tied for the game lead with nine total tackles, including a contest-best seven solo stops. Smith piled up 3.0 tackles for loss, one of which was a sack.
Senior linebacker
Garrett Hepner added seven tackles, two of which were for loss, and a forced fumble.
Waynesburg is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 20, when it makes a road trip to Saint Vincent. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
