Waynesburg battles back to win 3-1

WAYNESBURG, Pa (Oct. 5) – The Waynesburg University women's volleyball team hosted the La Roche College Redhawks in a non-conference matchup. After dropping the first set, the Yellow Jackets battled back and took the match 3-1.

In the first set, La Roche (9-11) won eight of the first nine points. Waynesburg (4-17) clawed back into the set and brought it within two points (12-10). However, the Redhawks did not allow the Jackets to get any closer and took the opening set, 25-17.

It was a different set in the second as both teams traded short runs with La Roche claiming an 8-6 lead. At this point, Waynesburg got behind the serve of senior Cassidy Guiser and rattled off eight-straight points to take a 14-8 lead. The hosts tied the match at one with a 25-16 set win.

In the third, both teams traded small runs again until Waynesburg opened a 17-11 lead. The Redhawks created some late drama in the set as they brought it within one point, 24-23. Waynesburg sophomore Hannah Colvin slammed home an assist by junior Olivia Zuchelli to win the set, 25-23.

The fourth set belonged to the Jackets from the start as they won seven of the first nine points. La Roche fought back and brought the set within three points, 10-7. However, Waynesburg learned from the comeback in the third and did not allow the Redhawks to get closer than five and took the final set 25-18 and the match 3-1.

Waynesburg senior Jordyn Wyllie led both teams with 17 kills and hit for .250. Freshman Hannah Buhr followed Wyllie with 16 kills with a hitting percentage of .237. Zuchelli topped her performance on Wednesday as she set a new personal collegiate high with a match-high of 49 assists. Guiser, once again, led the Yellow Jackets defensively with 21 digs.
