UNIVERSITY, HEIGHTS, Ohio (Nov. 18) – A beat up Waynesburg University wrestling team traveled to the John Carroll Duals for some rare Sunday action on the mats. Despite competing without three starters, the Yellow Jackets managed to post a 2-1 record on the mats.
Waynesburg (2-1) opened its day by beating Penn State Behrend (2-3) 31-14 and followed that up with a 30-9 triumph over Pitt-Bradford (0-5). The Yellow Jackets' day ended with a 32-12 loss to 25
th-ranked John Caroll (6-0).
After Waynesburg fell behind 3-0 against Behrend, freshman
Tyler Williams (Youngwood, Pa. / Hempfield) started a 2-1 day by picking up a forfeit at 133 pounds. Sophomore
Josh Kuslock (Hickory, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) added to the Jacket lead with an 11-3 major decision at 141 pounds. Sophomore
Matt Lascola (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Langley) made it three-straight victories with a gritty 6-5 decision at 149 pounds.
Behrend won three of the next four bouts, but senior
Matt Claxton (Columbia, Md. / Oakland Mills) scored a key pin at 165 pounds to keep Waynesburg in the lead. Clinging to a five-point advantage, the Jackets picked up forfeits at both 197 and 285 pounds to close out the win.
Once again, Waynesburg feel into an early hole against Pitt-Bradford, but a second-straight win by Williams at 133, this time a 7-4 decision, tied the match at 3-3. Three straight wins by the Jackets from 141 to 157 pounds, including a pin in 1:54 by junior
Zach Mackall at 157, gave the Orange and Black an 18-3 advantage.
The Panthers trimmed their deficit to 18-6 with a decision at 165, but junior
Dan Verhovsek (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland), who was making his season debut after wrapping up a third season with the Waynesburg football team, picked up his first win on the year with an 11-8 triumph.

Adam Rigney (Mount Union, Pa. / Mount Union) won his only bout of the day by besting his opponent at 184 pounds by 7-4 final to give the Jackets a 24-6 lead. Bradford scored its final victory by decision at 197, before senior
Jake Evans (Elizabeth, Pa. / Elizabeth-Forward), the number-one ranked heavyweight in the country, pinned his opponent in 2:08.
The Jackets never got things going against the Blue Flashes, who ran out to a 32-0 lead after seven weight classes. Kuslock and Mackall dropped competitive matches by decision in their final bouts of the day. Waynesburg won the final three weights of the match, with sophomore
Michael Mahon (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Fox Chapel) winning by injury default at 184 pounds, senior
Nick Kusich (Avella, Pa. / Avella) picking up a 7-3 decision at 197 pounds and Evans completing a 3-0 day with a 12-5 decision.
Waynesburg will look to heal up before it returns to the mats after Thanksgiving when it makes a trip to the two-day Messiah Petrofes Invitational on Friday, Nov. 30 and Saturday Dec. 1.
