HIRAM, Ohio (Dec. 18) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team snuck in one last game before Christmas when it traveled to Hiram on Tuesday. Despite standout performances from a handful of individuals, the Yellow Jackets fell 83-72 to the Terriers.
Waynesburg (3-7) never led on the night, but stayed within eight points of Hiram (6-5) throughout the first quarter. Unfortunately, the Terriers extended their lead to 47-39 by the time the two teams broke for halftime.
Hiram continued to pull away after winning the third quarter 21-19. The Jackets battled back in the fourth by scoring 24 points and holding the opposition to just 15. Unfortunately, it was too little, too late, as Waynesburg suffered the defeat.
Sophomore
Andrea Orlosky (Shelocta, Pa. / West Shamokin) racked up a game-high 20 points on eight-of-16 shooting from the field. She added a team-best eight rebounds to another productive night on the court.
Freshman
Haley Porter (Belmont, Ohio / Union Local) chipped in 15 points, nine of which came from three successful three-point attempts on eight tries. Freshman
Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) efficiently recorded 13 points on five-of-seven shooting and three successful free throws on four attempts.
Junior guard
Erin Joyce (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bishop Canevin) completed a quartet of double-digit scorers for the Orange and Black with 10 points. Senior point guard
Monica Starre (Jewett, Ohio / Carrollton) did a little bit of everything over a team-high 35 minutes off the bench. She combined eight points and eight rebounds with a game-high nine assists and a contest-best four steals.
One of the biggest reasons for Hiram's victory was its production at the foul line, where the Terriers knocked down 19-of-27 tries at the stripe. Waynesburg made nine-of-12 attempts.
The Jackets will be in action one more time before the end of the calendar year when they travel to the two-day Bluffton Holiday Tournament on Friday, Dec. 28 and Saturday, Dec. 29. Waynesburg faces the host Beavers on Friday to tip off its two-day run.
