WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 5) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team competed in its first home dual match of the 2018-19 season on Wednesday night at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The Yellow Jackets hosted Muskingum and thanks to a strong finish, picked up a 33-16 victory.
The Jackets (3-1) got off to a bit of a slow start after dropping matches at 125, 141, 149 and 165 pounds. However, the home team was bolstered by Muskingum (0-2) forfeits at 133 and 157 pounds that gave it a 12-11 edge heading into intermissions.
The Muskies picked up their final win of the night at 165 pounds to regain the advantage at 16-12.
The Jackets rolled from that point forward, starting with junior
Dan Verhovsek (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland) picking up a 10-3 victory at 174 pounds. Sophomore
Michael Mahon (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Fox Chapel) claimed the night's last forfeit to make the score 21-16 Waynesburg and set the stage for the home team's one-two closing punch of junior
Ken Burrs (Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) and senior
Jake Evans (Elizabeth, Pa. / Elizabeth Forward) at 197 and 285 pounds, respectively.
Burrs electrified the crowd with a thunderous pin at the 31-second mark of his bout. Evans closed out the evening with a fall of his own in 5:38.
Freshmen
Dylan Winters (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) and
Jaeden Gordon (Aliquippa, Pa. / Central Valley) collected the forfeits at 133 and 157 pounds, respectively.
The Jackets are back in action Saturday when they host the Waynesburg Duals, an event that features six visiting teams including nationally ranked programs Baldwin Wallace and Stevens Institute of Technology, as well as traditional national powerhouse Messiah. The day is broken up into four sessions and is scheduled to get going at 11 a.m.
