WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 8) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team hosted six teams for Saturday's Waynesburg Duals, including a trio of national powers. The Yellow Jackets went 1-3 over the day.
Waynesburg (4-4) opened with a 35-12 loss to eighth-ranked Baldwin Wallace (5-1). Junior 174-pounder
Dan Verhovsek (Johnstown, Pa. Richland) got the host team on the board with a 4-3 decision at 174 pounds.
Two weights later, junior 197-pounder
Ken Burrs (Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) took to the mat against third-ranked Zeck Lehman of BW in one of the event's several high class bouts. Burrs scored Waynesburg's biggest individual win of the day by edging Lehman by 6-5 decision.
Senior
Jake Evans (Elizabeth, Pa. / Elizabbeth Forward) picked up the first of his three forfeits at 285 pounds.
The Jackets next stepped to the mat against Messiah (6-3) and dropped a 31-10 final score. Burrs and Evans both improved to 2-0 on the day with a major decision at 197 pounds a first-period fall at heavyweight.
Waynesburg rolled to a 39-3 victory over Defiance (0-3) in its session three match against the visiting Yellow Jackets. After dropping a decision at 125 pounds, the Orange and Black rattled off nine-straight wins in front of its home crowd.
Freshman
Dylan Winters (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) got things started with a decision at 133 pounds and was followed by sophomore
Josh Kuslock (Hickory, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) scoring a major decision at 141 pounds. Sophomore
Matt Lascola (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Langley) downed his opponent 13-8 at 149 pounds.
Following a forfeit to junior
Zach Mackall (Austintown, Ohio / Austintown-Fitch) at 157 pounds, senior
Matt Claxton (Columbia Md. / Oakland Mills) picked up a 12-4 major decision at 165. Sophomore
Dillion Charlton (Stoystown, Pa. / North Star) notched his first win of the day by downing his opponent in an 18-6 major decision at 174 pounds.
Sophomore
Michael Mahon (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Fox Chapel) joined the win parade at 184 pounds with a 7-4 decision. Junior
Adam Rigney (Mount Union, Pa. / Mount Union) highlighted the Waynesburg victory with a first-period pin at 197 pounds. Evans again had to settle for a forfeit at 285 pounds.
Waynesburg finished the day against 19
th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology (5-3) Waynesburg fell 31-13 to the Ducks.
Mackall notched his second win of the day with a major decision at 165 pounds, before Burrs defeated his opponent 8-5 at 197 pounds and Evans logged his third forfeit.
Waynesburg is in action one more time in 2018. The Yellow Jackets head to Sandusky, Ohio, on Saturday, Dec. 15, for the Kalahari Duals, which are being hosted by Heidelberg. Start time is scheduled for 9 a.m.
