Waynesburg women storm past Chatham

Five Jackets reach double digits in 70-45 victory

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 7) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team welcomed Chatham to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown. All five Yellow Jacket starters scored in double digits as the home team rolled to a 70-45 victory.

Along with the offensive prowess showcased by Waynesburg (13-9, 9-6), it also put together one of its best defensive showings of the 2017-18 campaign. The 45 points scored by Chatham (4-18, 2-13) were the fewest allowed by the Jackets this year. The Orange and Black also held the opposition to a 25.8 percent showing from the field, including a one-for-13 effort from three-point range.

Waynesburg never trailed on the night and led 22-15 at the end of the first quarter. The Jacket defense really clamped down in period number two, holding the Cougars to just six points and building a 38-21 halftime advantage.

Chatham closed the gap to 50-35 after three quarters, but Waynesburg finished strong, outscoring the visitors 20-10 in the fourth-and-final period. The Jackets shot 50 percent from the floor, but were even more efficient from long range, drilling five-of-nine tries from downtown.

Senior forward Addy Knetzer, led the Jacket charge with a team-high 17 points on eight-of-14 shooting from the floor. She grabbed 10 rebounds to complete her team-leading eighth double-double of the year. Senior Mackenna Drazich recorded a double-double of her own on 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Junior point guard Monica Starre set contest bests in both assists (seven) and steals (four), while also scoring 10 points. Senior guard Rachel Eng contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocks to the winning effort, while sophomore guard Erin Joyce went for 11 points on three-of-five shooting. Joyce canned a game-high three treys.

The Jackets return to action on Saturday, Feb. 10, when they make a road trip to Thomas More. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
