Softball travels to Carlow

Waynesburg drops two to Celtics

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (March 19) – The Waynesburg University softball team ended an 11-day hiatus from competition with a road trip to NAIA member Carlow on Monday. The Yellow Jackets dropped both ends of the doubleheader against the Celtics.

Carlow (8-5) took the opener 4-0 and completed the sweep with a 5-2 victory in game two. Five different Yellow Jackets (5-5) notched one hit each in game one. Junior Courtney Messenger got the start in the circle for the opener and took the loss after allowing four earned runs on seven hits over three innings of work. Freshman Emma Kubalak was strong in relief, scattering three hits and three walks over three scoreless innings.

Game two got off to a much better start for the visiting team, which took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning thanks to a well-executed sacrifice bunt by junior shortstop Keri Renzler that allowed sophomore catcher Ashley Dubovich to score the game's first run. Unfortunately, that was Waynesburg's only lead of the day, as Carlow rebounded with a three-run third inning that provided all the offense it needed for the victory.

The Celtics tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, before the Jackets tallied the final run of the afternoon in the top of the seventh. Freshman right fielder Marlee Ott picked up an RBI groundout that allowed Renzler to sprint home.

Much like in game one, Waynesburg saw its seven hits in game two go to seven different batters. Freshman Miranda Bowers got the start in the circle and took the loss after yielding three runs, all earned, on four hits over three innings of work. Kubalak again came out of the bullpen to work the final three frames. She gave up two runs, one of which was earned, on a hit and two walks.

The Jackets are back in action tomorrow at Point Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
