WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 31) – The Waynesburg University baseball team hosted Bethany on Saturday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. It was a tale of two games for the Yellow Jackets, who fell 11-4 in game one, but bounced back for an 8-1 win in the late contest.
A two-run double in the top of the first inning gave the Bison (4-11, 1-3) at lead they never relinquished throughout game one. After senior
Tyler Godwin cut the lead in half with a sacrifice fly in the first, Bethany answered back with a run in the second and two more in the fourth.
Junior second baseman
Tyler Reis started a monster day with a solo homerun in the home half of the fourth inning. Reis added two more RBI with a single in the seventh.
A slew of defensive miscues ultimately did in the Orange in Black (5-13, 1-3) during the loss, as seven errors led to seven unearned runs. Offensively, the Jackets stayed right with Bethany, who held just a slight 12-10 edge in hits over the home team.
Sophomore
Mason Miller took the loss on the mound after allowing five runs, four of which were earned on seven hits and four walks. He also recorded four strikeouts. Three Jacket relief pitchers combined to give up six runs, none of which were earned on six hits and two walks.
Waynesburg combined an outstanding starting pitching effort from sophomore
Jonny Kutchman and maybe its best offensive output of the season to roll to a second-game victory. The Jackets outhit Bethany17-6 and belted three homeruns in the victory, including two more by Reis. Freshman
Tyler Srbinovich also launched a three-run bomb that made the score 4-0 Waynesburg in the third.
The Jackets got the scoring going in the first with an RBI single by Srbinovich. His first collegiate homer, which came in the third inning, gave the home team a lead it never relinquished. Sophomore
Brenden Kohan also drove in a run on a fourth-inning single.
Kutchman picked up the win after working six sterling innings on the mound. He didn't allow a run and gave up just three hits and two walks, while striking out three Bison on the day. Junior
Brandon Lawless, junior
Ty Wickline and Srbinovich combined for three scoreless frames out of the bullpen.
The Jacket defense also pulled a complete 180 in the field, playing error-free defense during the victory.
Reis went five-for-nine over the split with three homers, six RBI and four runs scored. Srbinovich added a four-for-nine showing with the bat with four RBI and a run scored.
Waynesburg is back in action on Wednesday, April 4, when they travel to Geneva for a PAC doubleheader with the Golden Tornadoes. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
