WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 18) – The Waynesburg University baseball team traveled up Interstate 79 North for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets were swept by the Presidents by the final scores of 11-1 and 4-1.
The PAC-leading Presidents (19-9-1, 11-1) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning and stretched that advantage to 7-0 thanks to a run in each in the bottom of the third and fourth innings.
Waynesburg (7-19, 3-9) got on the board in the top of the fifth when sophomore designated hitter
Jordan Kowalski teed off on his first collegiate homerun. Kowalski went two-for-three in game one to pace the Jacket offense.
Senior
Noah Lolley got the start on the mound and took the loss after giving up six runs, all earned, on nine hits over three innings of work. Juniors
Ty Wickline and
Brandon Lawless closed out the early contest.
A trio of Waynesburg pitchers did a much better job of limiting the W&J bats in the late contest, holding them to four runs on eight hits. Freshman
Zach Straub suffered the loss after starting and working 2.2 innings on the mound. He gave up three runs, all earned, on five hits and a walk. Junior
Nate Gearhart and freshman
Tyler Srbinovich combined to give up just one run on three hits and three walks out of the bullpen.
The Jackets got on the board in the top of the ninth when senior leftfielder
Tyler Godwin roped an RBI double that scored sophomore
Justin Buberl. Unfortunately, that's as far as Waynesburg's comeback attempt progressed before W&J recorded the final out.
Godwin's double was one of three Waynesburg hits in the late contest.
The Jackets are scheduled to be back on the field tomorrow when they host Pitt Greensburg for a nine-inning non-PAC game. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
