Softball wraps up 2018 season

Waynesburg drops two to Bethany

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 28) – The Waynesburg University softball team wrapped up 2018 schedule on Saturday by hosting Bethany for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets dropped both ends of the twin bill by the scores of 6-1 and 6-3.

Waynesburg (12-20, 5-13) trailed 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning of game one, but were able to break up the shutout when freshman pinch hitter Christine Baker singled in freshman Hannah Batovsky. Unfortunately, Bethany (17-16, 9-8) rallied with two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to wrap up the victory.

Freshman third baseman Tara Staley and sophomore catcher Rachel Skon both went two-for-three to pace Waynesburg at the plate. Skon picked up a double on the day. Junior pitcher Courtney Messenger got the start in the circle and worked all seven innings.

Game two got off to a quicker start for the Jackets, who grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Skon singled in freshman center fielder Marlee Ott. The Bison answered with a run in the second, one in the fourth and one more in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 advantage.

Waynesburg tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Skon connected on an RBI groundout and junior first baseman Alex Lawrence tied the game with a run-scoring single. Unfortunately, Bethany took the lead back for good with a run in the sixth. The visiting Bison tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh to close out the win.

Lawrence went two-for-three in the final game of her junior season. Junior leftfielder Cat Atllstatt added a two-for-four showing.
