WAYNESBURG, Pa. (May 5) – The Waynesburg University baseball team wrapped up the 2018 season on Saturday with a senior day doubleheader against Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Grove City. The Yellow Jackets fell in both games against the Wolverines.
Grove City (15-18, 8-10) took game one 10-2 and followed that up with a 15-6 victory in the late contest. Waynesburg (10-22, 6-12) found itself on the wrong end of a sweep, despite taking first-inning leads in both contests.
The Jackets jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning of game one thanks to an RBI double by junior second baseman
Tyler Reis and an RBI single by senior leftfielder
Tyler Godwin. Unfortunately, the home team was unable to score for the remainder of the contest. Senior
Noah Lolley got the start on the mound and suffered the loss after allowing four runs on five hits and two walks over 5.1 innings of work. He was the first of four pitchers to see action in the opener.
Waynesburg played right with Grove City over the majority of game two and led 3-1 after the first inning. Godwin drove in his second run of the day to tie the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame. Freshman catcher
Chris Lee followed shortly after with a two-run single that gave the Orange and Black the early advantage.
Unfortunately, the visiting team exploded for 11 runs in the top of the third. That outburst gave GCC all the offense it needed to pick up the win. The two teams played the remainder of the contest evenly (3-3) to wrap up the regular season.
Defensive miscues played a major role in Waynesburg's season-ending loss. The Yellow Jackets committed five errors that yielded 11 unearned runs.
Sophomore
Jonny Kutchman got the start on the mound and allowed eight runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits and two walks over 2.2 innings of work. Kutchman struck out five on the day and was the first of five Waynesburg pitchers to see action in the contest.
Reis and sophomore
Justin Buberl both went four-for-eight over the doubleheader to pace the Jacket offense. The two combined to score five runs and each notched an RBI.
