WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 12) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team welcomed Franciscan to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse for a Wednesday night match against the Barons. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but were unable to unable to take another set as they dropped a 3-1 final score.
The Jackets (1-9) won a thrilling opening set by outlasting Franciscan (1-8) 27-25. Set two produced another tight score, which went 25-22 to the Barons. The third set was even tighter with Waynesburg taking it right down to the wire. Unfortunately, the visiting team pulled out the 25-23 victory to take a 2-1 lead.
Set four saw Franciscan jumping out to a comfortable 24-15 advantage. The Jackets went down swinging with back-to-back kills, but a hitting error ended the set and the night.
Waynesburg was paced offensively by senior
Jordyn Wyllie, who put down a team-high 11 kills. Freshman
Hannah Buhr chipped in nine successful attacks.
Junior
Alyssa Proper had perhaps the best all-around night of any Waynesburg player. Not only did she record a match-high 33 assists, but she ogged a kill in her only attempt, came up with 11 digs and ripped a match-best five aces.
Freshman
Amanda Eckman led the defensive charge with a squad-best 15 digs. Senior
Cassidy Guiser added 13 digs and four aces on the evening.
The home team was ultimately done in by 38 attack errors. The Jackets held a sizeable advantage in assists (42-to-30) and edged Franciscan in digs (62-60) and kills (43-38).
The Jackets play the last of six-straight home matches on Friday, when Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Grove City comes to town. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
