Box Score WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 1) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team opened its 2018 schedule on Saturday with a home match against Pitt Greensburg. The Yellow Jackets used a pair of Bobcat forfeits and strong play in doubles competition to pick up a 5-4 victory.
Waynesburg (1-0) got things started with victories at first and second doubles. Freshman
Kyleigh Schmidt and junior
Noelle Hughes combined to score an 8-4 victory in the number-one spot. Sophomore
Lauren Wadsworth and junior
Sierra Stevens followed at number-two with a hard-fought 8-6 triumph. The doubles sweep was completed when freshman
Abigail Stahl and sophomore
Abby Walbrown received a forfeit at third doubles.
The Bobcats (0-1) rebounded in singles play by going 4-2 over the six flights. The first of Waynesburg's two solo wins was recorded in straight sets (6-2, 6-0) by Hughes at third singles. Jacket sophomore
Olivia Ference picked up a forfeit at the number-six spot to help seal up the win.
The Jackets play their second of five-straight home matches to open the schedule on Saturday, Sept. 8. Waynesburg welcomes Westminster to town for its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match of the year.
