WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 26) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team continued the fall portion of its schedule on Wednesday when it hosted Geneva. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Golden Tornadoes 6-3 in a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match.
The Jackets (2-0) got off to a fast start by sweeping Geneva (1-2) in the three doubles matches. The senior duo of
Jonah Cooper and
Josh Denham got things going with an 8-4 win at number-one doubles. The freshman pair of Connor Cassidy and Joey English followed with an 8-4 triumph of their own at the second spot. Junior
Tanner McKnight and senior
Brian Drake completed the sweep by gutting out a 9-7 victory at the number-three flight.
The two conference rivals split the singles matches to wrap up the day. Cooper completed a 2-0 day by winning in straight sets at first singles, before Denham did the same after scoring a 3-6, 6-2, 10-7 triumph the number-two spot. After Geneva was victorious at the third flight, Cassidy downed his opponent 6-3, 6-4 at fourth singles.
Waynesburg is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 29, when it travels to Washington & Jefferson for the full-day W&J Invitational. The Jackets' first match against Pitt Greensburg is scheduled for 10 a.m.
