GREENVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 25) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team hit the road on Friday to face Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Thiel on Friday night. The Yellow Jackets built an early 11-0 lead, only to see the Tomcats battle back before one of the best closers in the country sealed the deal on a 23-17 victory.
Freshman
Dylan Williams (Schellsburg, Pa. / Chestnut Ridge) got things rolling for Waynesburg (7-7, 2-0) with a 9-6 victory at 125 bounds. Sophomore
Josh Kuslock (Hickory, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) improved to 2-0 with two bonus point victories since dropping to 133 pounds by rolling to a 15-0 technical fall (5:00). A third-straight Jacket win was provided by sophomore
Matt Lascola (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Langley), who gutted out an 8-6 decision in overtime that made the match score 11-0.
The home team (5-4, 0-2) responded with a three-bout win streak of its own that cut the Waynesburg advantage to 11-9 heading into the 174-pound contest. Redshirt sophomore Tony Welsh (Fredericktown, Pa. / Fredericktown) answered Thiel's challenge with the quickest fall of the night, pinning his opponent in just 1:41.
Thiel made things interesting with eight combined points at 184 and 197 pounds that tied the score at 17-17. However, Waynesburg could breathe easy knowing defending national heavyweight champion
Jake Evans (Elizabeth, Pa. / Elizabeth-Forward) was waiting at 285 pounds. The senior star scored a second first-period pin in as many matches this week to close out the Jacket victory.
Waynesburg is off until Saturday, Feb. 2, when it heads to Baldwin-Wallace to compete in the John Summa Memorial Invitational. The event is scheduled to get started at 10 a.m.
