Waynesburg women roll through Westminster

Jackets explode in 93-65 victory

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 26) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team played host to Westminster on Saturday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown. The Yellow Jackets put together one of their best halves of the season to blow open a slim halftime lead and roll past the Titans 93-65.

Westminster (7-13, 5-6) won the first quarter by outscoring Waynesburg (6-13, 4-7) 23-17. The Yellow Jackets, who have now won three of their last four games, started their turnaround by pouring in 29 points in period number two. By the time the final first-half whistle blew, the home team held a slim 46-44 advantage.

After returning to the court to start the third quarter, Westminster took a 48-46 edge after scoring the first four points of the period. The Orange and Black answered with six-straight points, four of which came from junior Andrea Orlosky (Shelocta, Pa. / West Shamokin).

With 4:41 remaining in the quarter, the Jackets led by just three points. That advantage expanded to 11 thanks to contributions from four different players over an 8-0 run. After a Titan free throw ended the surge, Waynesburg freshman forward Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) tallied the game's next six points to put her team up 70-54. Freshman Kacey Kastroll followed with a pair of free throws that put the Jackets ahead by 18 with 20 seconds left in the quarter.

A Westminster three pointer closed the scoring in the period and brought the Blue and White to within 15 points of the lead. The trey wound up being just a temporary delay in the Jackets' road to victory. Waynesburg built up leads as large as 29 points before closing out its most lopsided win of the year. Its 93-point outburst not only set a new season high by 11 points, but represented the program's most successful offensive performance since going for 94 in the second round of the 2017 ECAC Tournament.

Orlosky led the charge in a masterful Jacket effort by pouring in a game-high 25 points. Her 14 rebounds were not just a game high, but the most by a Waynesburg player this season. The combination of the two impressive statistics earned Orlosky her second-straight double-double and her fourth of the season.

Speaking of double-doubles, Fuller recorded her third in a row and fourth of the 2018-19 campaign.

Senior point guard Monica Starre (Jewett, Ohio / Carrollton) once again reached the precipice of an elusive triple-double. She contributed eight points, nine rebounds, a game-high nine assists and a contest-best four steals over 34 minutes on the floor.

Junior guard Erin Joyce added 13 points and four assists to the winning effort, while freshman guard Haley Porter (Belmont, Ohio / Union Local) tallied 12 points. Kastroll came off the bench to pile up 15 points.

While the Waynesburg offense earned its share of the credit for Saturday's impressive win, the defense made a huge turnaround that may have been the biggest reason for a happy weekend at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. After allowing Westminster to shoot 61 percent in the first half, the Titans connected on just 19.4 percent of its tries over the third and fourth quarter (seven-of-36), including one make in 10 three-point tries.

The Jackets are back in action on Monday when they play their final non-PAC game of the season. Waynesburg travels to Bridgewater for a 5 p.m. tipoff with the Eagles.
